Idris Murphy, 5 day Jervis Bay Escape 2017
Spend 5 days in one of Australia's most magical landscapes, painting and learning with Idris Murphy!
Idris Murphy's work speaks of Australian spaces, its sophisticated, simple and utterly original. Idris is a one-off. A workshop with him is an experience which takes you beyond the practicality of painting. Murphy's paintings depict a unique presence while having a firm basis in a broader picture-making tradition. He works from direct observation, combines this with an undefinable reservoir of knowledge in history, art theory, philosophy and culture and years of practical experience in both teaching and painting to then form works of simple elegance which challenge colour theory and space. He is able to articulate complex ideas simply and exposes students to a variety of ideas and approaches
We will be based in the grounds of the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum in Huskisson and will be focusing on interpreting the landscape with Idris. The Maritime Museum combines a tradition of boat building in Huskisson, with diverse landscapes, from a board walk through the mangroves to views across the beautiful Currambene creek and opportunities to paint old boats in semi states of decay and rehabilitation.
