Art Workshops Jervis Bay
Lord Howe Island Painting Workshop 2017 - Idris Murphy
Idris Murphy is one of the most individual and highly respected artists working in Australia. His art education was in the UK at Winchester School of Art, at the NAS in Sydney and at Wollongong University, where he completed his doctorate. He was Head of Drawing at the National Art School and a lecturer at COFA in Sydney until 3 years ago, when he left to paint full time. He has also been taking students and artists on painting trips to the Australian outback for the last 25 years.
Idris works from direct observation, combines this with an undefinable reservoir of knowledge in history, art theory, philosophy and culture and years of practical experience in both teaching and painting to then form works of simple elegance which challenge colour theory and space. He is able to articulate complex ideas simply and exposes students to a variety of ideas and approaches. |
His work speaks of Australian spaces, it is sophisticated, simple and utterly original. Idris is a one-off. A workshop with him is an experience which takes you beyond the practicality of painting.
Described by locals as the ‘Last Paradise’, Lord Howe Island provides breathtaking landscape and natural beauty not found anywhere else. Raging seas, ancient forests, mottled reefs, majestic mountains and ever changing skies await you.

Your small group will explore infinite artistic opportunities on the world heritage listed island, with one of the most influential landscape painters in Australian contemporary art.
This is a rare opportunity to join a few new friends you haven’t met yet, and learn from a master of Australian landscape painting in the ‘Last Paradise'. Places are strictly limited so please book early! Idris tailors his teaching to all levels of ability. We use a range of locations throughout the island, some artists prefer to self direct and others prefer more support. Some lectures are in the evening. Partners are also welcome.
