Andrew Finnie is a Newcastle artist working in both the analogue and digital area. His analogue practice is based around painting and his work often depicts local Newcastle scenes or may be of still life images...all are done in a somewhat loose and "less is more" style influenced by fauvist painters where colours are used to build form and are not necessarily the true colours we see in the landscapes depicted.
In contrast, his digital works are often dark and brooding illustrations that unsettle the viewer and, by nature of the process, are very detailed and precise.
Finnie's latest exhibition held at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) is entitled "The Enlightening Journey of Mr Hugo Ball" and takes Hugo Ball, the annunciator of Dadaism, on a journey through art history where Finnie appropriates/misappropriates/quotes/references a number of famous artworks, as have many artists throughout history.
The resulting images challenge our knowledge and views on artworks & artists of history and provide a darkly humorous journey into the mind and thoughts of the artist.
