Human 'Formation' Human beings, either moored in the city environment or adrift in the void, are the figures populating the paintings of Joe Frost. Abstracted and modified through multiple layers of repainting, his images offer a vivid account of contemporary life. While Frost’s observations of the aridity of the retail wasteland can edge towards bleak comedy his artworks are concerned with many aspects of our complex modern life. Motifs – escalators for example – suggest movement, though his figures seem stranded in transit. We are all, in a way, searching for form as are these inventive characters whose nature lies somewhere between abstraction and figuration. http://www.art-almanac.com.au/2014/04/joe-frost-paintings-and-works-on-paper-2/
